Usually after lighting the bowl, the herb will stay \"cherried\" or lit. You do not want to keep it burning thus wasting the weed before your next hit. What you can do is Snuff the bowl. This is done by taking your lighter, your hand, or your finger and laying/snuffing it over the top of the bowl. This cuts off the oxygen and does not let the bowl burn away.
