Study: Fewer Young People Driving Under The Influence Of Alcohol And Marijuana

Washington, DC: The percentage of young people who report having driven under the influence of alcohol and marijuana combined has fallen significantly, according to data published by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Between the years 2002 through 2014, the reported prevalence of marijuana and alcohol use prior to driving fell from 2.3 percent to 1.4 percent among those age 16 to 20 and from 3.1 percent to 1.9 percent among those age 21 to 25. Studies report that the use of the two substances combined is associated with additive adverse effects on various measurements of psychomotor performance.

Authors also reported that the prevalence of young people who acknowledge having driven under the influence of alcohol alone has fallen dramatically since 2002, while the percentage of young people reporting having operated a vehicle after consuming cannabis alone remained largely unchanged at roughly three percent.

Additional information on marijuana and psychomotor performance is available in the NORML report, "Cannabis and Driving: A Scientific and Rational Review," online @ https://norml.org/library/driving-and-marijuana

Survey: Marijuana Access Motivates Colorado Tourism

Denver, CO: Nearly one out of two tourists visiting to Colorado say that their decision was motivated by the state's permissive attitude toward marijuana, according to the findings of a just-released study commissioned by the Colorado Tourism Office.

Among Colorado vacationers surveyed, 49 percent said that cannabis' legal status influenced their decision, with 22 percent of them saying that it was "extremely influential."

A record number of tourists visited the state in 2014. Recreational sales of cannabis to adults became legal in Colorado on January 1, 2014.

The results of a statewide Quinnipiac University poll commissioned in November reported that 55 percent of Colorado voters support the state's present marijuana policies, and that 53 percent of respondents believe that the policies have been "good for the state."
