CBS News Poll: Majority Of Americans Back Legalizing Marijuana

New York, NY: Most Americans say that marijuana is safer than alcohol and support legalizing its use, according to nationwide polling data compiled by CBS News.

Fifty-three percent of respondents answered 'yes' to the question, "Should marijuana use be legal?" That is the highest level of support ever recorded by CBS pollsters since they began posing the question in 1979. Forty-three percent of respondents opposed legalization.

Males, younger voters, and Democrats were most likely to support marijuana's legalization. Seventy-four percent of those who acknowledged having tried marijuana said that the plant ought to be legalized, compared to just 35 percent who have never used it.

Most respondents (51 percent) also agreed that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol. Only 12 percent of respondents said they believed that marijuana is more harmful than booze, while 28 percent said that both substances possess equal harms.

Forty-three percent of respondents acknowledged having consumed marijuana, an increase of nine percent since 1997. Seventy-five percent of respondents said that it would not matter to them if a Presidential candidate admitted having tried it.

On the question of legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, 84 percent of respondents supported allowing physicians to authorize cannabis therapy to their patients.

The CBS News poll is the latest in a series of national surveys showing majority support for legalizing and regulating marijuana.

Scandal Causes DEA Head To Resign

Washington, DC: Obama administration officials confirmed last week that Drug Enforcement Administration head Michele Leonhart is stepping aside.

Members of the US House Oversight Committee recently gave Leonhart a vote of "no confidence" after an Office of the Inspector General report revealed that DEA officials had participated in sex parties arranged by Colombian drug cartels and had also received weapons and cash from cartel members. None of the agents involved in the incidents were fired by director Leonhart.

Michele Leonhart began serving as the agency's acting director in November 2007 before being confirmed as DEA administrator in 2010. She will leave the agency in mid-May.

Fox News Poll: 51 Percent Of Voters Favor Legalization

New York, NY: A majority of registered voters believe that marijuana should be legal, according to nationwide polling data commissioned by Fox News.

Fifty-one percent of respondents said that they favored "legalizing marijuana." The figure is an increase of five percentage points since Fox commissioned polling on the question in 2013. It is the first time that a majority of respondents have favored legalization in a Fox News sponsored poll.

Democrats (62 percent), men (56 percent), and those under the age of 35 (54 percent) were most likely to favor legalization. Republicans (36 percent), those over the age of 65 (39 percent), and women (46 percent) were least likely to favor legalization.

Rhode Island: Nearly 60 Percent Of Voters Say Regulate Marijuana

Providence, RI: Nearly six out of ten Rhode Island voters favor legalizing marijuana like alcohol, according to survey data compiled by Public Policy Polling.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents said that they support "changing Rhode Island law to regulate and tax marijuana similar to alcohol." Only 35 percent of respondents said that they oppose legalization.

Respondents between the age of 18 and 35 were most likely to support legalization (73 percent), as were Democrats (65 percent), and those between the age of 50 and 64 (57 percent). Men and women supported legalization in equal numbers.

Legislation seeking to legalize the use and retail sales of cannabis for adults is pending before the state House and Senate.

Washington: Governor Signs Measure Amending State's Medical Marijuana Law

Olympia, WA: Governor Jay Inslee has signed legislation, SB 5052, significantly amending the state's medical cannabis program. The new law takes effect in late July.

Changes imposed by the law include the establishment of a voluntary registration system for qualified patients. Senate Bill 5052 also reduces the number of plants that patients may legally cultivate and possess, and imposes new regulations on physicians who authorize medical cannabis. Patients who require cannabis in quantities above state-specified limits must receive explicit authorization from their recommending physician acknowledging their specific medical needs.

The measure licenses retail marijuana providers to engage in the sale of medicinal cannabis. It also provides tax breaks to authorized patients who purchase cannabis on the retail market. Collective grows consisting of four patients or fewer remain permitted under the new law.
